Après at the Canteen

When you’re looking for a great spot for après in Breckenridge, Colorado, head to the canteen, the Canteen Tap House and Tavern that is.  It’s comfort food and local brews served up in one of the oldest buildings on Main Street.

My friend Melissa and I both decided to go with a Canteen Cocktail.  Our pick was the Canteen Ahhh Rita.  The margarita is made with Maestro Dobel Tequila, triple sec, fresh lime juice, a dash of orange juice and a float of Grand Mariner.  Here’s my favorite part – it’s served up in a canteen mug.

We’re both queso fans and we were starving from an afternoon of hiking in the snow so we decided to indulge.  The chips are so good we asked our server what the brand is.  They’re Raquelitas Corn Chips made in Denver.  You can find them in Whole Foods, Natural Grocers, Sprouts and other places.  The Queso Fundido is a wonderful yumminess of bubbling melted cheese topped with salsa and chorizo.  It had been awhile since I’d had queso so this was a mega treat!

We both decided on burgers.  Melissa went with The Hoss topped with bacon, cheddar, house BBQ and onion rings and I went with a Veggie Burger with Cheddar.  My veggie burger was chocked full of beans and other veggies.  It was SO good.  Of course, we had to have fries!  We both ate half of our burgers and half of the fries, which are crispy and salted to perfection.  Boy, did we have some great leftovers from our après, which ended up being lunner, our lunch and dinner.

This was my second time to Canteen and Melissa, as a Breck local, has been several times.  The food and service are consistently great.  If you’re looking for a place to rehydrate and refuel in Breck, head over to the Canteen….and dive into a delightful world of a happy food coma après your outdoor adventure.
