Four Free Fun Things to Do in Winter in Breckenridge, Colorado

With new snow this week and more coming next week, spring skiing is fantastic at Breckenridge Ski Resort.  The resort is open for daily skiing and riding through Memorial Weekend.  If you hit the slopes in the morning that gives you plenty of time in the afternoon for off slopes fun.  Here are four free things to do in Breckenridge.  Three of these you can do during summer too.

Go Sledding

There are two free sledding hills in Breckenridge.  Runway Sledding Hill is the newest one.  It’s “BYOS” (bring your own sled) or you can borrow one from the Sled Shed.  It’s a man-made walk-up hill.  It’s fast and fun!   For a summer alternative – take the free gondola up to the base of Peak 8.  Lots of family fun there.

Hike to See Mining Relics

There are tons of scenic trails around Breckenridge.  In spring, most trails are pretty packed down for snow hiking.  You can also rent snowshoes or cross-country skis if you’d rather explore the trails that way.  My favorites are Jessie Mill and Preston Ghost Town or Sallie Barber.  Both have some fascinating mining relics and views.  Both of these hikes are great in summer too and very doable for families.  If you head to Breckenridge Nordic Center to snowshoe or ski, make sure to see the Hallelujah Hut.

See a Troll

I’ve been a fan of the troll since it was created for Breckenridge International Festival of Arts a couple of years ago.  15-foot tall Isak Heartstone has his own home in the woods now, complete with a short loop trail.  He is the most popular outdoor art exhibit in Breck.  It’s a great leisurely outing in summer too.

Do a Self-Guided Tour in the Arts District

Breckenridge is filled with Victoria-era historic building and it’s also filled with interesting art installations.  You can pick up a map at the Old Masonic Hall or Welcome Center.  Breck Create has a self-guided tour you can listen to on your phone.  There are three routes to explore in the Breckenridge Arts District.  This is also fun to do in summer.

Breck Extra – Country Boy Mine

It’s not free, but it’s one of the most unique experiences in Breckenridge.  During a visit to Country Boy Mine you learn about Breckenridge’s mining history as you put on a hard hat and go over 1,000 feet into a mining tunnel.  It’s open year-round.  They recently added extreme sledding.  There’s also ice skating, snowshoe rentals, panning for gold and donkeys.
