I put the original Costa WaterWoman sunglasses to the test while fishing on Lake Michigan. Captain Jeff of Fast Break Charters was also wearing Costas, so I figured I had the right shades for catching a big one.

They must have brought a little luck. I reeled in two lake trout measuring more than 30 inches.

Stylish Sunglasses Made for the Water

I tested a tortoise-and-blue frame with Costa’s polarized 580 lenses. The color faded from tortoise at the top to blue along the bottom.

The design looked stylish on the boat but worked equally well for relaxing on a dock or beach. They offered the performance of fishing sunglasses without making me look like I was entering a bass tournament.

Polarized Lenses for Fishing

Glare can make it difficult to see beneath the surface of the water. Costa’s polarized lenses significantly improved clarity during my fishing trip.

The 580 lens technology enhances colors and filters harsh light. Costa says its current lenses also provide 100% UV protection and polarization.

That combination makes them useful for fishing, boating, kayaking and paddleboarding. They’re also a solid choice for any bright day near the water.

A Snug Performance Fit

The WaterWoman sunglasses fit more snugly than the lifestyle frames I typically wear. It took a little time to get used to the tighter feel.

That secure fit is also an advantage during active days. I’d rather have sunglasses hug my head than watch them disappear into Lake Michigan.

Fit is personal, so try them on before buying whenever possible.

Is the Original Costa WaterWoman Still Available?

The original WaterWoman I tested is no longer part of Costa’s current lineup, but still available on sale. Its successor is the Costa WaterWoman 2.

WaterWoman 2 is an extra-large, wide-fitting frame with medium coverage. It has polarized 580 lenses, 100% UV protection and a scratch-resistant coating. The current frame is larger than the original, which provides a little extra coverage.

My Final Take

The original Costa WaterWoman sunglasses delivered excellent clarity, stylish color and a secure fit during my Lake Michigan fishing adventure.

They felt tighter than my everyday sunglasses, but that made sense on the water. After landing two trophy-size lake trout, I certainly wasn’t complaining.
