I tested the Costa Caleta sunglasses from the Untangled collection during a trip to Roatán, Honduras. The lightweight shades combined water-ready performance with an eye-catching plum frame.

Sunglasses Made From Recycled Fishing Nets

Costa partners with Bureo to turn discarded fishing nets into sunglass frames. Styles in the Untangled collection are made with either 97% or 100% recycled fishing nets.

It’s an innovative use for material that can pollute oceans and harm marine life. I especially like when outdoor gear helps protect the places where we use it.

My Caleta frames were made with 97% recycled fishing nets. The style was named for the small fishing villages near Laguna San Rafael National Park in Chile.

I wore these sunglasses every day in Roatan. The polarized lens were great out on the water for snorkeling adventures and for spotting fish on docks. From power walks on the beach to relaxing in the shallow water or a hammock, they were perfect for my island vacation. Plus, the color combo is stylish and different.

Testing the Costa Caleta in Roatán

The plum frames and gray lenses immediately caught my eye. They looked different from my usual sunglasses and felt surprisingly light.

I wore them every day in Roatán. The polarized lenses reduced glare during snorkeling excursions and helped me spot fish from the docks.

They were equally comfortable during power walks on the beach, afternoons beside the pool and lazy hammock time. That last one was admittedly not the toughest gear test.

Costa’s large lenses provided plenty of coverage in intense tropical sunshine. I added a retainer while boating because even sustainable sunglasses won’t help the ocean if they sink to the bottom.

Is the Costa Caleta Still Available?

Costa no longer lists the Caleta among its current styles. You can still find them, including on Amazon.

The good news is that Costa still offers its Untangled collection in lifestyle and performance designs. The company also continues its broader effort to use more responsible materials and reduce plastic waste through its ocean conservation initiatives.

My Final Take

The Costa Caleta sunglasses delivered the polarized protection I wanted for a tropical vacation. They were lightweight, comfortable and stylish enough to wear away from the water.

Although this specific style has been retired, the Untangled collection remains a compelling choice for travelers who want high-performance sunglasses made with recycled materials.
