The Uncharted Park Pack is my go-to alternative to a traditional backpack for hikes of five miles or less, like North Table Mountain near Golden, Colorado. The biggest reason is simple: it gets the weight off my shoulders.
Surprisingly Spacious Pack
Don’t let its compact design fool you. The main compartment is spacious enough for a windbreaker, lightweight puffy, snacks, and more. I’m surprised how much I can get in it! The mesh interior pocket is perfect for stashing the Uncharted Triage Kit, which you can purchase with the pack as a bundle. There’s also a top zippered pocket to keep keys and other small essentials safely stowed.
Two water bottle holders keep hydration easily within reach. It’s super easy to grab one and drink while not stopping on the trail. The front straps are handy for stashing a layer or carrying collapsible trekking poles.
What Takes Getting Used To
It does take a little trial and error to find the best fit. Instead of sitting at my waist, the pack is most comfortable resting on my hip bones, That’s the sweet spot so there’s no space between the pack and my back. Also, the included water bottles are squeeze bottles, which take a little getting used to so you’re not spilling water down your chest. Neither is an issue after the initial adjustment period.
Uncharted Supply Co. is a veteran-owned company based in Utah. If you’re looking for a roomy hip pack for an alternative to a backpack, the Park Pack is worth considering.
On multi-day international treks and safaris, the Uncharted Triage Kit is part of my first aid kit for adventure travel.
If you’re looking a tiny bag to stash your ID and credit card while hiking, I use the Cotopaxi Allpita Mini Bag.
