Getting Cheesy in Pottsville, Pennsylvania

It’s National Grilled Cheese Day, a.k.a. my favorite sandwich day, so it’s perfect timing for me to share the best dang grilled cheese I’ve had in a long time. Exactly one week ago, I was in the small town of Pottsville, Pennsylvania, touring Yuengling Brewery, the oldest brewery in America. After the tour our group was ready to nosh on something yummy. The folks at Yuengling suggested the Wheel Restaurant. The diner style joint a short walk from the brewery was perfect for the rainy chilly afternoon.

The menu is filled with all sorts of grilled cheese options, along with mac and cheese and other comfort food deliciousness. Travel + Leisure named it one of the 25 best diners in the U.S. There are over 75 ingredients to pick from to make your own gourmet grilled cheese. You go through the paper menu and check what you want – bread, toppings, cheese, sauce, dipping sauce, protein, and sides.

I went for locally made sourdough bread with cheddar, tomato, and avocado for my grilled cheese. The waitress said the sweet potato fries were amazing so I went for a side of those too. The fries are served with a caramel brown sugar butter dipping sauce. I’m not typically a sauce kind of gal, but oh my word was that sauce was addicting! My ooey gooey lunch came to a grand total of $7.50.

We had two birthdays in our group (one that day and one 21st birthday that week) so we surprised them with desserts and song of course. Wish I could share pics of the chocolate lava cake and chocolate peanut butter cheesecake but they were devoured before I could snap some shots. I did get to sample the crabby cheese fries my friend Hope order. Decadent is the word for those. If you find yourself in Pottsville, PA – make a stop at the Wheel.
