Keystone Resort is known for summer hiking and mountain biking, but my favorite morning adventure on Dercum Mountain combines two very different adventures: mountaintop yoga and snow tubing.
You go from zen to spin practicing yoga at 11,640 feet then zooming down the Adventure Point tubing hill, as long as the snow last.
Mountaintop Yoga Above the Trees
Any chance I get to do mountaintop yoga, I jump at it. There’s something special about rolling out a mat above treeline, surrounded by Rocky Mountain peaks, sunshine, and a cool alpine breeze.
I joined my friends Sara, Kristen, Sylvia, Darrel, and Greg for a class on Keystone’s Keytop Deck. Greg had never tried yoga, and it was fun watching him experience his first practice in such a spectacular setting.
Our instructor, Jenna, guided us through an easy flow suitable for a range of abilities. You could try a side crow or handstand, settle into child’s pose, or simply sit quietly and take in the view. It was your practice.
The morning was peaceful, but not entirely silent. A mystery yoga fart sent us all into fits of laughter. The culprit finally confessed several hours later at Keystone Bacon and Bourbon Festival. What happens on the mountaintop apparently does not always stay on the mountaintop.
Summer Snow Tubing at Keystone
After savasana, we traded zen for spin at Adventure Point. Keystone’s tubing hill sits atop Dercum Mountain and, when snow conditions cooperate, offers the wonderfully odd experience of snow tubing during summer.
We linked our tubes together for several runs and laughed our way down the hill. A conveyor lift carried us back up, giving us just enough time to catch our breath before doing it again.
Wear sneakers or another pair of closed-toe shoes. You may walk through snow to reach the tubing lanes, and flip-flops are not the footwear for this adventure.
Planning a Summer Day at Keystone Resort
Mountaintop yoga schedules and offerings can change from year to year, so confirm whether classes are available before planning your visit. Summer snow tubing is also dependent on snow conditions and may not operate throughout the entire season.
Keystone currently offers a variety of warm-weather activities, including scenic gondola rides, hiking, downhill mountain biking, golf, lake activities, and seasonal events. Check the official Keystone Resort summer activities page for current dates, prices, reservations, and operating details.
If you’re heading up Dercum Mountain, bring water, sunscreen, sunglasses, a light jacket, and closed-toe shoes. Even on a glorious summer morning, mountain weather can change quickly. Most importantly, have fun going from zen to spin!
