When Mother Nature throws you clouds in South Texa

When Mother Nature throws you clouds in South Texas for a total solar eclipse, you put your meteorological skills to work and go eclipse chasing. We got breaks in the clouds before, during, and after totality while on a Hill Country road north of Uvalde. Different from my 2017 experience with mostly sunny skies and it was awesome!

Last stop for me on @royalcaribbean Serene of the Seas segment was Jeju Island, which was my favorite stop and one day was not enough there. We hired a taxi driver for a few hours and drove across island to Yakcheonsa Temple, a large Buddhist temple. The driver walked with us and encouraged us to go up to the second and third floors of the temple as a monk chanted. Next stop was a short hike to Oedolgae, which means Lonely Rock. Then we went to Cheonjiyeon Waterfalls. It was the perfect last stop and left qme wishing for more time on Jeju Island, one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. It was a wonderful experience speaking on a cruise for the first time during a journey to multiple fabulous places in Asia as part of the #ultimateworldcruise

The weather took a turn for Busan stop on @royalcaribbean Serenade of the Seas but still had a great time exploring this South Korean city. First stop was Beomeosa Temple then went to Gamcheon Culture Village with colorful houses and shops. From there our taxi driver we hired for several hours took us to the Fish Market for an amazing lunch. Last stop was the Little Sky Observstory for a great view of city and cherry blossoms.

Walked over 9 miles exploring Okinawa and loved every bit of it. Started at Shuri Castle Park. So the tea if you go. Found a lovely park nearby then went to Tama-udon, a mausoleum for royal family of the Sho Dynasty. Found an incredible (and very local) lunch spot then walked to Shikinaen Royal Garden. Last stop was at Fukushuen Garden before catching a stunning sunset back aboard @royalcaribbean Serenade of the Seas.

Loved returning to Taiwan, if only for a day (was there before recent earthquake). Started at Lungshan Temple in Taipei then guide Ivy took us through a nearby herb alley. We explored Bo-Pi-Liao historic block, tried a traditional pastry for breakfast, and got bubble tea at local favorite spot. We had an amazing lunch in a very local restaurant before making quick stops at Chiang Kai-shek Memorial and National Palace Museum. We went up in Taipei 101, one of the tallest buildings in the world. Last stop was a very packed Keelung Night Market. Such a fun day during @royalcaribbean Serenade of the Seas stop.

Second day in Hong Kong was a little more leisurel

Second day in Hong Kong was a little more leisurely walking the city. Started at @vissionbakery recommended by a local then walked over to nearby Parade Ground to see plaza and murals. After time on the island went back to mainland for a fabulous lunch @rosewoodhongkong along the waterfront in Tsim Sha Tsui neighborhood. Took a quick ride to wander through the beautiful galleries @hongkongpalacemuseum then spent last hour back along the waterfront walking the Avenue of the Stars. What a wonderful overnight stop during this segment on @royalcaribbean Serenade of the Seas during Ultimate World Cruise that I’m speaking on in multiple sessions.

From foggy Victoria Peak to Temple Street Night Market enjoy some scenes from a day in Hong Kong. It’s a phenomenal city and easily walkable as I covered 9 miles strolling through Hong Kong Park after Victoria Peak, stopping for lunch @dimsumlibrary, walked over to Man Mo Temple, did happy hour at World’s Top 50 bar @argobarhk, then wandered through through the night market during @royalcaribbean Serenade of the Seas overnight in Hong Kong.

My first glimpse of Hong Kong from @royalcaribbean

My first glimpse of Hong Kong from @royalcaribbean Serenade of the Seas is bittersweet as China was where my brother was working for Michelin when he was in an accident, suffered a brain injury, and passed away 18 months later from the injury compounding his alcoholism and depression. We were supposed to take the Orient Express, see the Great Wall of China, and other things together after his work commitment but that never happened. The low clouds covering the tops of skyscrapers are a fitting ambiance as I visit my 49th country. I live my life the way I do because he couldn’t. Late May will be 8 years since he passed. As I explore this fascinating city I know he’ll be with me every step of the way.

Spent Sunday in Manila complete fascinated by the justaposition of luxe and modern against modest and old. Started the day working from the rooftop pool deck @marriottbonvoy Manila then wandered around Old Town for a couple of hours this afternoon including catching mass at Manila Cathedral on Palm Sunday then exploring Fort Santiago, strolling a street market, and stopping in St. Agustin Church before boarding @royalcaribbean Serenade of the Seas as an enrichment speaker for this leg of the Ultimate World Cruise.
