Kindred Resort brings a new level of luxury to Keystone. The ski-in, ski-out hotel opened in May 2026 as the first luxury hotel at Keystone.
Sitting in River Run Village, just steps from the River Run Gondola, it’s step from the gondola. There are 107 guest rooms, 95 residences, several dining options, a spa, and a beautiful mountainside pool area.
My friend Adeina joined me for a one-night summer stay. We packed a surprising amount of adventure, food, and even a celestial show into less than 24 hours.
Checking Into Kindred Resort
Arriving a little after 5:30 p.m., we quickly checked in to our neighboring rooms on the first floor. I was in Room 124, and she was next door in Room 123.
The rooms have a sleek, modern design with plenty of natural influences. Hues of steel blue and spruce green bring the colors of the outdoors inside.
There are several hooks for jackets and backpacks in the entryway, along with a full-length mirror and ample storage. The bright bathroom features a large shower and a spacious vanity. I also appreciate the toilet being in a separate room.
Opening the closet, you’ll find plush robes, slippers, and two luggage stands, instead of the standard one. It is a small detail, but a thoughtful one when two people share a room.
One wall is line with a spacious work desk, coffee bar, and mini refrigerator. Drawers and open cubbies offered plenty of storage beneath the television. A bench and lovely bird artwork add another nod to the mountain setting.
My favorite design feature is the treescape above the bed. A comfortable chair and ottoman created a cozy spot to relax. The spacious balcony looks directly toward the mountain for a great view.
I always appreciate a welcome basket, especially when filled with local products. Kindred Resort puts sweets from Denver-based Hammond’s Candies and bottles of cream soda and root beer from Carbondale.
We didn’t linger in our rooms long. One of Keystone’s best summer events was underway at the top of the mountain.
Riding the Gondola to Summer Afternoon Club
It’s literally just a few steps from Kindred to the River Run Gondola. You truly cannot get much closer to the mountain.
On select summer Thursdays 4-7pm, Keystone hosts Summer Afternoon Club. The event includes a free scenic gondola ride, live music, lawn games, and food and drink options. A golden-hour gondola ride is glorious with soft evening light washing across Keystone’s slopes and surrounding peaks.
After taking in the music and views, we rode back to the base. Dinner at Kinji is only a few steps away.
An Omakase Dinner at Kinji
Kinji Sushi blends the energy of an alpine resort with the vibrant flavors of Japan. The intimate restaurant specializes in artfully presented small plates.
Chef Ben Dirck created an omakase-style tasting menu for us. Plans are in the works to add a tasting menu for ski season.
The Archangel is the restaurant’s most popular cocktail. This refreshing drink is a blend of gin, apple, cucumber, and lemon oil.
Our first dishes included a Tuna Tower with spicy tuna, avocado, and jalapeño. The Cucumber Sunomono Salad was light and refreshing. House-made garlic chili crisp added a pleasant kick of heat.
One of my favorite bites was the Avocado Rice Bomb. It’s a crispy rice cake topped with avocado-yuzu purée, pickled serrano, scallions, and sauce. The pickled serrano delivers more sweet tanginess than heat. Its presentation is stunning, and the tiny morsel is phenomenal.
Next came Yellowtail Aguachile with Palisade peach and tobiko. Salmon sashimi was served with jalapeño, lemon, tamari, sweet soy, and tobiko. We also sampled scallop and eel nigiri.
The Ricky Bobby Roll combines tuna, salmon, yellowtail, cucumber, and jalapeño. It’s topped with avocado and both black and orange tobiko.
My favorite presentation is the Tuna Sashimi Trio. Slivers of bluefin tuna, white tuna, and ube-cured escolar form a rose. Thinly sliced cucumber create its stem and leaves. It almost looks too pretty to eat. Almost.
The heartiest course was miso-glazed black cod. Roasted Japanese eggplant and baby bok choy complete the warm dish.
Sake pairs beautifully with sushi and Chef Ben gave us some produced by Colorado Sake Co. In the RiNo district, it’s Denver’s only sake brewery and another way Kinji uses Colorado-based products.
We ended the tasting with mochi and had a choice of green tea, vanilla bean, chocolate, or strawberry. Before we left, Chef Ben brought over peach cobbler with crumbles on the side.
“This will be perfect with my early morning coffee,” I promptly announced.
Watching a Lunar Eclipse From My Balcony
As we walked out of Kinji, we had a wonderful view of the August 27th lunar eclipse.
Bundling up in one of the plush robes, I watched from my balcony including the peak at 10:12 p.m. MDT. Even without an eclipse, stargazing from your balcony is delightful. Having a spacious balcony and unobstructed mountain view turned an already special night into an unforgettable one.
An Early Morning Walk Through Keystone
If you’re an early bird, coffee on your balcony is a treat. I was up early enough to watch the moon set as dawn broke over Keystone. With the temperature at 42 degrees, daybreak in late August is a refreshing hint of the coming fall.
Since uphill hiking is restricted by the gondola, opt for a gentler walk from the resort. Crossing the bridge near the gondola, I followed the trail heading east.
The path leads to a peaceful landscape of marsh ponds, where you might spot a duck sunning itself on a rock. This prime moose habitat, so keep an eye out for the gangly creatures as you walk. It’s also possible to see bears in the area.
Continuing along the trail takes you to the Dercum’s Dash neighborhood. This is an easy outing from Kindred to get a couple of miles. On the way back I paused to soak in a spectacular view of the resort.
Breakfast at Lula’s and Pool Time
After my walk, I returned to Kindred for breakfast at Lula’s. My granola, berries, and yogurt tasted even better on the patio with crisp mountain air.
I spent the final part of my stay enjoying the resort’s pool deck. The area features a year-round heated pool, two oversized hot tubs, cabanas, and ample seating. Couches and chairs line the rail, all facing the mountain.
A few splashes of yellow had started to appear on the trees. They’re a subtle sign fall is already knocking on Keystone’s door.
Is Kindred Resort Worth It?
Kindred’s biggest luxury is its location. You can walk from your room to the gondola, restaurants, trails, and River Run Village in minutes.
The thoughtful room design, mountain views, inviting pool area, and elevated dining make it more than a convenient basecamp. For a luxury getaway in Keystone, Kindred Resort is perfect for a ski vacation, summer adventure, or Colorado’s brief but beautiful fall season.

Another option for a fabulous fall hike is Angler Mountain, with the trailhead is just 20 minutes from Kindred Resort. Lily Pad Trail is a great summer or fall hiking option for families or if you want a more mellow hiking adventure.
