Sometimes one night at a hotel is plenty. At Hotel Tupelo, I left wishing I had booked two.

Located on Main Street in Tupelo’s historic Fairpark District, Hotel Tupelo is a 79-room boutique hotel with a fun mix of Southern style, mid-century modern design and nods to the city’s music heritage. It opened in 2021 and is part of Wyndham Hotels & Resorts.

The downtown location was ideal for my quick stay, especially since I was trying to pack a lot into 24 hours in Tupelo.

A New Hotel That Looks Like It Has a Past

When I pulled up, I assumed the brick building had been converted from an old warehouse. It fits so naturally with the surrounding downtown architecture that I asked about its history.

Turns out, the hotel is new. A clothing warehouse once stood on the site, but was torn down years ago. There was also an earlier Hotel Tupelo just off Main Street that is long gone. The current hotel was intentionally designed to blend with downtown Tupelo’s historic buildings, and they did a convincing job.

Inside, the lobby is welcoming without feeling overly formal. Jobos, the hotel’s restaurant and bar, is right off the lobby and serves coastal-inspired dishes and cocktails. There’s outdoor seating too, which would be a great spot on a pleasant Mississippi morning or evening.

At check-in, they offer a complimentary sip from Queen’s Reward Meadery. It’s Mississippi’s first meadery. When I checked in, I sampled Pucker Up made with pure Mississippi honey and natural lemon flavors.

Inside My Double Queen Room

I stayed in Room 229, a Double Queen. At 335 square feet, the room has two queen beds, a writing desk, mini-fridge, and a couple of thoughtful extras. What struck me first was how much usable space there is.

Just inside the door, there’s a dedicated spot for luggage, hooks holding an umbrella which is perfect for northern Mississippi’s late afternoon summer storms, and a tall mirror. The bathroom is bright with a large vanity and plenty of counter space. Two little details I appreciated were the clothes steamer tucked into its own space and the hair dryer stored in a cute bag. Small touches, but handy ones.

The main room has even more storage, a mini-fridge, a large desk that’s actually big enough to work at, and a well-stocked coffee station. Colorful accents at the foot of the beds add some personality.

The high ceiling, combined with the brick-building aesthetic, gives the room more of a loft feel than a typical hotel room.

My one quibble? It was a little dark for my preference. The hotel leans into mood lighting as part of its design. While it looks stylish, I tend to prefer a brighter room.

Room 229 is on the backside of Hotel Tupelo. I did appreciate how quiet it is, in fact, it’s one of the quietest downtown hotels I’ve ever stayed in.

Why Hotel Tupelo Works for a Quick Tupelo Getaway

Location is one of Hotel Tupelo’s biggest advantages for exploring the shops and restaurants along Main Street. Elvis Presley Birthplace is about 1.3 miles away, while Tupelo National Battlefield is just over two miles from the hotel. Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield Site is 15 miles away, or a 20-25 minutes drive.

There’s complimentary street park around the hotel. I was in and out a lot with no problems finding a parking spot. Hotel Tupelo also offers complimentary bikes so you can cruise around town. Plus, it’s dog-friendly.

For my whirlwind visit, it was exactly the kind of home base I wanted: stylish but comfortable, easy to get in and out of, and close to what I wanted to see.

The only problem with my stay was that it was too short. After one night at Hotel Tupelo, I was already wishing I had one more so I could enjoy a relaxing evening in Jobos.
