I’d seen Coalatree Trailhead Pants on social media and wanted to find out if they lived up to the hype. I need adventure clothing that is durable, comfortable in multiple seasons and versatile enough to go from trail to town.
I ordered the unisex Trailhead Pants in Rust, size small and regular fit. The pants currently cost $99 and come in seven colors, with regular and slim fits available.

Testing the Coalatree Trailhead Pants
My first test of the Coalatree Trailhead Pants was a February boat ride and hike to Rainbow Bridge National Monument. It was cold and windy during the nearly three-hour boat ride, and the pants did an impressive job blocking the wind and keeping me warm.
On the trail, they were stretchy, breathable and never felt restrictive. The ankle drawstrings let you cinch the pants into capris, which is helpful for stream crossings or keeping the fabric out of the way on rugged terrain.
I wore them again on a breezy boat outing near Amelia Island, Florida. I pulled them over my shorts when the temperature dropped and was surprised by how well the ripstop nylon blocked the wind and light spray.
Later, I tested them during a road trip from Denver to Capitol Reef National Park and while exploring Ute Mountain Tribal Park. Even with temperatures in the 70s, the pants stayed comfortable. The ankle ties kept the fabric from snagging as I climbed ladders, and the red dirt wiped off easily.
What I Like and Don’t Like
The four-way stretch and regular fit make the pants comfortable for hiking, road trips and layering. I also like the deep pockets, water- and stain-resistant fabric and packable design. Rust is an unexpected neutral that looks especially good against desert scenery.
My only complaint is the waist drawstring. I would prefer it on the inside, or not at all, since the pants already have an elastic waistband. The regular fit is also loose on me. With my athletic thighs, I played it safe, but the slim fit likely would have worked.
My Final Take
Coalatree Trailhead Pants are a versatile option for hiking, travel and outdoor adventures. They handled cold wind, warmer desert temperatures, boat spray, rugged terrain and long hours in the car.
They’re comfortable, durable and easy to pack. While I’m still not a fan of the exterior waist drawstring, that’s a minor style preference. These pants have earned a regular spot in my adventure wardrobe.
