It’s a massive metal sculpture slowly flapping its wings over a fountain of bubbling water. As the wings moves it sings a swan’s song in tandem to the sounds of the flowing water.
Wings Over Water is an art installation on the new Plaza at Avenida Houston. It is stately in daylight, but mesmerizing at night.
The kinetic sculpture by artist Joe O’Connell is 30 feet high, 25 feet wide, and 70 feet long.
The “feathers” are made of stainless steel, aluminum and Stamisol fabric. As the “feathers” sway slowly it create a melancholic melody with the water rhythmically flows through the huge base.
I just stood and watched captivated by the movement of this metal monster that almost looks like something straight out of a sci-fi flick as it changes colors from a fiery red to calming blue as day turned into night. I guess that is fitting since the sculpture is a nod to Houston’s aerospace heritage.
