On May 23, 2016, a 5:23am phone call and two words forever changed my world.

My mom could only get out “he’s gone,” before handing the phone to a police officer who told me Jimmy, my only sibling, had died. I can’t believe it’s been 10 years.

In a grief journey, time does help you navigate the pain, but some days on the calendar are harder than others. This past week I’ve felt like I’ve been spinning in circles trying the squelch my quiet anguish over this anniversary. I purposefully planned to be alone today giving myself permission to not be okay.

10 years ago I made a promise to my brother to not stay in a job or relationship if I was not 100% happy. I still live by that. It’s the reason I left hosting a tv show in Houston to go on a journey to joy….and that healing journey hadn’t stopped. It’s a journey I’m writing into a book.

I make a choice everyday to live with joy and view the world with a childlike wonderment, because he couldn’t. Wherever I go in the world, I know he’s is with me. Jimmy - you were my first friend - I love you always forever.

32 years of forecasting weather…and I still didn’t see this coming in Alaska. 🌈🐋🧊

A rainbow appeared as we cruised into Endicott Arm…

And a whale surfaced below it.

Then the double rainbow stretched across the sky….

And an iceberg drifted by as if on cue.

I understand the science behind rainbows, but moments like this remind me why I still look up in awe.

Cruising through the Tongass National Forest aboard the Mist Cove with @theboatcompany, the world’s only nonprofit cruise line, felt like watching Alaska try to outdo itself.

This was a magical moment as Southeast Alaska reminded me why it’s one of the wildest places on Earth including its weather.🥰

Paddling through Nelson Bay in Alaska’s Tongass National Forest with @theboatcompany was immersion into a spectacular underwater world.

Crystal-clear water revealed starfish (or sea stars) everywhere, clinging to the rocks above and below the waterline at low tide.

Then came the rest of the magic: vibrant sea anemones, a bald eagle soaring overhead, a waterfall spilling into the picturesque bay, snacking on salty rock weed straight from the sea, and exploring glowing sea caves so vivid I might have even named one. 🥰

This is the Alaska most people never see. No crowds. No mega ships. Just wild coastline and a kaleidoscopic underworld for an incredible afternoon adventure.

On the way back from Alaska I stopped in Seattle so I could check off my 50th national park spending a day in @olympic_nps. Along the scenic Hurricane Ridge drive I saw a bear just before taking in the view from the top. It was 32°F at the ridge!

Then I drove along Lake Crescent on my way to Hoh Rain Forest, one of the best examples of a temperate rain forest in the U.S. I hiked the Hall of Mosses and was able to enjoy some moments of solitude along the trail.

Tips:
• Start early as both Hurricane Ridge and Hall of Mosses are very popular. I started about 6:30a.
• It takes 40-45 minutes each way to drive the 17-mile narrow Hurricane Ridge.
• It’s 2.5 hours from top of ridge to Hoh Rain Forest - Lake Crescent is worth at least 1 stop.
• I got to Hoh Rain Forest Visitor Center about 10:30a and parking lot was almost full. They meter parking during peak times. Add extra time to your visit (at least an hour) or plan to get there early.

Had the most epic glacier day with @theboatcompany visiting the Dawes Glacier in the Endicott Arm. We went on skiffs weaving our way around growlers, bergy bits, and icebergs to get within a quarter to half mile of the glacier.

With sunshine enhancing the calving, Dawes put on quite a show. Truly a phenomenal day. Reel coming soon!!!

This is not your average soaking stop. A short rugged trek on Baranof Island in Tongass National Forest leads to one of Alaska’s hottest spots.♨️🌲

I did this steamy adventure with @theboatcompany and it felt like stumbling into Alaska’s off-the-radar spa with geothermal soaking pools carved beside roaring snowmelt in the heart of the wild.

Baranof Warm Springs are raw, steamy, and unforgettable.

My Alaska bingo card did NOT include a beaver using a waterfall as its personal shower on the edge of the sea. 🦫🌊

In Tongass National Forest, I caught my wildest wildlife moment yet with a beaver swimming in saltwater in Nelson Bay on Baranof Island, bathing beneath a waterfall, then riding the current back into the bay.

Beavers may be common in Alaska, but actually spotting one like this? Incredibly rare. Seeing it from a kayak during an early morning excursion aboard @theboatcompany Mist Cove made the moment even more surreal.

Last stopping on project with @beefitswhatsfordinn

Last stopping on project with @beefitswhatsfordinner @oklahomabeef was @butcherbbqstand. Make sure to see the new push pin in Wellston that makes the halfway mark of Oklahoma’s 400-miles, the longest driveable stretch of the Mother Road of any state.

Head to @butcherbbqstand - dubbed best BBQ in Oklahoma. Get there early as there is ALWAYS a line Friday-Sunday at this award-winning joint featured in numerous TV shows.

OKC is about an hour away. Stay @classeninnokc for a retro stay on Route 66. Experience the cowboy culture of Stockyards City, where we grabbed dinner in a saloon. To end the night we popped over to OKC’s Film Row for dessert @peretscoffee.

Such a fun adventure and I can’t wait to share a series of stories soon!

I had a ball returning to Tulsa working on a big project for @beefitswhatsfordinner @oklahomabeef. After a night in the historic @thecampbellhotel on Route 66 I got to spend time in the kitchen with Nick and Matt @nickys_smokehouse in the super cool food hall @motherroadmarket. There’s always a line, but it’s worth the wait! My fav are the phenomenal tacos.

I also got to check out Tulsa’s Route 66 “Land of the Giants” including the newest addition Rosie the Riveter before continuing west on @route66official.

If you’re driving Route 66 - book a night in Tulsa. It’s the “Capitol of Route 66” and has 28 miles of the Mother Road within its city limits.

Snow globe mode fully activated with giant flakes dumping on Cinco de Mayo. Snow in May in Colorado isn’t unusual…but this could be biggest May snowstorm in Denver in 23 years.

We were in the 70s last weekend, getting buried in snow midweek, and heading back to the 70s this weekend. Honestly, this kind of Colorado weather roller coaster never gets old. 🥰

After the historically dry winter, we’ll gladly take the moisture. 🌨️❄️🌨️❄️🌨️❄️

Here’s more from cruising Route 66 in a U-Haul (see previous post) last week while working on stories along America’s Beef Trail for @beefitswhatsfordinner @mobeefcouncil. 🛣️

From Carthage to Joplin, Route 66 in southwest Missouri delivers peak roadside Americana. In @experiencecarthagemo my friend @adeinaanderson and I wandered the wonderfully weird world of ghost town turned art installation at Red Oak II followed by a hearty breakfast with cowboys at Iggy’s Diner, a cool eatery housed in 2 train cars.

We passed by one of America’s last working drive-ins. I’d love to see a flick at the iconic 66 Drive-In Theatre.

We took a quick detour off Route 66 to see @joplinstockyards which opened in 1930. It’s the largest cow/calf auction in the nation…and yes I climbed up on a stall for a better view.

Last stop in @visitmo was in @visitjoplinmo. Don’t miss the tile mural with a replica of a red 1964 Corvette embedded into it. For lunch we stopped @dtbjomo, a fun and busy burger shack right on Route 66. The special pimento cheese burger was amazing!🍔

It’s the kind of Route 66 day to remind you the Mother Road still has plenty of stories left….even from the front seat of an @uhaul.😂

It’s an adventure this week in Missouri! Flew into Springfield right after a big hail storm damaged every rental car at airport to throw a kink into the plan. After filming at Casper’s - Springfield’s oldest diner - for a big Route 66 project with @beefitswhatsfordinner and @mobeefcouncil had to rent a U-Haul because there were no rental cars in the city.

So off my friend @adeinaanderson and I went on Route 66 seeing a few sites in Springfield, stopping at Gary’s Gay Parita, and spent the night at Boots Court Motel in Carthage. It’s one of the oldest operating hotels on Route 66!

Off for Day 2 of this wild ride!😂

Just a girl and her new favorite horse…meet Noble.🐴

He’s a rescued American mustang with grit and grace. Out here @theranchatrockcreek, the world’s only Forbes 5-Star ranch, this isn’t just horseback riding, it’s luxuriously experiencing the real West.

Big Montana sky, the snow-dusted Sapphire Range in the distance, miles of open land, and trotting through the sagebrush make it truly special.

I’ve ridden quite a bit and done some phenomenal rides, but the opportunity to ride an American mustang is unforgettable.

I’m definitely a member of Noble’s fan club….and based on the snuggles at the end of the ride I think he likes me too. 🥰

Montana doesn’t ask you to slow down in the spring… the weather makes the decision for you.

It snowed all morning. Quiet, steady, and forces you to slow down whether you planned to or not. By afternoon, blue skies were back. One minute winter, the next it’s saddle up season.

April @theranchatrockcreek feels like a reset:
• chilaquiles for a late, linger-a-while breakfast
• a trail ride through a fresh dusting of white
• making new friends with Flip and Flop (and a few four-legged trail partners, too)
• guided breathwork + a sound bath with Eve that resets everything
• a Montana Distillery whiskey tasting before happy hour
• and ending the day with a French Cowboy–themed dinner by @chef.zac that topped it all

This is luxury that doesn’t try too hard. It just lets nature set the pace.

And around here… the weather always gets the last word.
