For a solid workout with scenic payoff, Mount Galbraith is an excellent hike option about 25 minutes from Denver. On a glorious Friday morning, I hit the trail with my dear friend and mountain guide Dr. Jon Kedrowski and three guys also training with him for a Kilimanjaro trek this summer. I trekked to Everest Base Camp with Jon in 2022, so I know firsthand how great he is at prepping folks for big mountain adventures.

This lollipop loop starts on Cedar Gulch Trail, climbs steadily up to the Mount Galbraith Loop, and includes a short spur to the summit. We logged about 4.2 miles with just under 1,000 feet of elevation gain and wrapped it up in just under two hours. The quick elevation gain, rocky terrain, and narrow singletrack make it a perfect trail for building strength and endurance – especially if you’re prepping for something like Kilimanjaro, Machu Picchu, or even a Colorado 14er.

The summit views from 7,247’ stretch across Golden, North Table Mountain, and Denver to the east and snowcapped mountains to the west. It’s an energizing start to the day.

Trail Tip: Go early and on a weekday if you can—less trail traffic as it’s very popular on weekends. Dogs are allowed. There are some very rocky sections so watch your footing.
Whether you’re training for high-altitude trekking or just want a hike near Denver with a quick climb and great views, Mount Galbraith is a good one.
