One Night in Vicksburg, Mississippi: Civil War History and Southern Charm

A one night stay in Vicksburg, Mississippi is just enough to fall for this historic river town perched high above the Mississippi River.  It’s a riverfront city filled with history and flavor.  From rooftop sunset dinner to Civil War history, here’s how to make the most of one night in Vicksburg.

Stay: Victorian Airbnb Near the Riverfront

While on a road trip to visit National Park Service units, my friend Adeina and I checked into this charming Victorian home, tucked in a quiet residential neighborhood just minutes from the heart of downtown. The updated space has vintage character with modern touches, making it a peaceful basecamp. There’s a full kitchen and sitting room.  The spacious Airbnb is the entire second floor, with it’s own entrance. It has two bedrooms making it a wonderful change from hotel rooms.

Dinner: Sunset at 10 South Rooftop

As golden hour arrived, we headed to 10 South Rooftop Bar & Grill for dinner with a view. Perched above the tallest building in town, this is the place to catch a Delta sunset. The panoramic views stretch across the Yazoo and Mississippi Rivers. We snagged a table just in time to sip a cocktail as the sun dipped below the tree line. We split the pimento cheese appetizer and I went for shrimp and grits as my entree.  Both pair nicely with their 10 South of the Border margarita.

Morning: Highway 61 Coffee and Military History

After a good night’s rest, we grabbed lattes at Highway 61 Coffeehouse, a laid-back downtown favorite filled with books, art, and small-town hospitality. With caffeine in hand, we set out to explore one of the most significant Civil War battlefields in the country.

Vicksburg National Military Park is an incredibly well-preserved site telling the story of the 47-day siege that helped turn the tide of the war. The self-guided driving tour is excellent, with markers, monuments, and interpretive panels bringing history to life.  It is one of the best marked battlefields in the world. The Illinois Memorial and the USS Cairo gunboat museum are highlights not to miss.  Give yourself at least 3-4 to explore and learn about the Civil War battle.

Lunch: Bohemia Café & Bakery

Before hitting the road, we stopped for a casual lunch at Bohemia Café & Bakery, a cozy local spot with a vintage vibe. The grilled cheese with tomato on house-made garlic and mozzarella bread with a sweet tea was a great send-off from our one night in Vicksburg.
