Santa Cruz oozes beachy vibes, coastal quirkiness, and chill mode. Pulling into Santa Cruz just before 6 p.m., I checked in at Casablanca Inn on the Beach perched right across from the iconic Santa Cruz Wharf. With its white stucco walls, coastal color palette, and breezy seaside feel, this inn fits perfectly into the California coast aesthetic, It was ideal for my seaside stay.
My room has a private balcony with a view of the beach and wharf – ideal for sipping coffee or watching the sunset. The room is spacious with a coastal-modern vibe with hardwood-style floors, a navy headboard, and crisp white linens. It even has a kitchenette, which is handy for longer stays, beach picnics, or stashing road trip snacks.
Even though it was drizzling, I strolled the wharf and decided on Riva Fish House for dinner. Their Lupe’s Mighty Fish Tacos with grilled mahi mahi were packed with flavor. The tacos paired perfectly with the ocean view.
Beach Stroll and Coastal Walk
The next morning was chilly, and I eased into the day relaxing with coffee in bed before walking over to Marea Sol Café for a latte and indulged in a chocolate pastry. I walked along the beach watching the tide roll in and out for a bit. Wanting more of a workout, I joined locals on the scenic West Cliff Drive Trail. This popular coastal path winds along the bluff with sweeping ocean views and a salty breeze.
I made my way to the Surfing Monument and the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum inside a lighthouse. This spot marks the birthplace of mainland U.S. surfing brought to Santa Cruz in 1885 by three Hawaiian princes riding redwood planks. It’s a small museum with a big story. From the overlook, I joined the crowd watching surfers getting in their Saturday morning surf sessions.
With a late check-out, I had time to enjoy brunch at The Picnic Basket. As I noshed on a wonderful breakfast burrito, I got the sense its a locals’ favorite.
I relished in catching the Santa Cruz vibe of slowing down and chillin’ at the beach with a seaside stay at Casablanca Inn on the Beach. If you’re looking for a classic beach town experience with a cozy inn that’s walkable to the wharf, beach, and surf spots, Casablanca Inn on the Beach checks the boxes. It’s equal parts relaxing and nostalgic, with just enough modern comforts. Plus, it has hard-to-beat ocean views.
This was a relaxing one-night stop before I headed to Santa Clara to speak at the Bay Area Travel & Adventure Show. For other stops on this road trip, check posts on 3 National Park Service sites in the Bay Area in a day and hiking Pinnacles National Park.
